Speckled Killifish, Fundulus rathbuni
Physical Description:
� Elongate body
� Small, terminal mouth
� Large eye
� Teeth on jaws
� No spines on fins
� Slightly round tail fin
� Dorsal fin is located over the anal fin, about equal in size
� Large plate-like scales on the head
� Dark flecked or diamond-patterned body
� Males with tubercles on fins
Similar species:
� Banded killifish (Fundulus diaphanus)
Mean body size:
� Adults are 40-70 mm standard length
Habitat:
� Pools, backwaters, and slow runs with sandy and silty substrate
Distribution in VA:
� Lower Dan system of the Roanoke drainage and a Hyco River tributary
Food Habits:
� Aquatic insects and fish
Reproductive Habits:
� Mature at age 1
� Spawning occurs from mid-May to July
� Fecundity is about 300 eggs per female
Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance:
� Special concern status in Virginia
